Chronological Return Ordering 1
Definition phase
Chronological return ordering measures the relationship between a stock's return observations and their age inside the lookback window. Higher values indicate a path with weaker recent returns and stronger distant returns, while lower values indicate the reverse ordering.
The idea is that investors may put too much weight on recent returns relative to more distant ones, which can create a recency-driven mispricing channel inside the path of returns itself. The ordering of returns is the informative object rather than the cumulative total alone.
Inside the finance research stack, the representative implementation sorts the Russell 1000 cross-section on the ordering measure and compares the highest values against the lowest values in a market-neutral spread.
